The amaryllis (botanically Hippeastrum) is the classic winter bloomer: a thick bulb pushes up a sturdy stalk topped with huge trumpet-shaped flowers. Easy and perennial — with a cool rest period it reblooms every year. Note: all parts are toxic.

Areca palm

The areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), or golden cane palm, is a popular houseplant. It likes bright indirect light, steady moisture and higher humidity — not classic hydroponics.

Basil

Ocimum basilicum

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a warmth-loving culinary herb in the mint family. It grows fast in soil, coco and especially well in hydroponics — regular harvesting keeps it bushy.

Bay Laurel

Laurus nobilis

Bay laurel is an evergreen shrub or small tree from the Mediterranean — the spice behind soups, stews and pickles, and at the same time a very forgiving container plant. In the ground it eventually reaches 10 m; in a pot, pruning keeps it comfortably at 1.5-2 m. It grows slowly (20-40 cm a year), shrugs off drought and hates wet feet. Outside its native climate it is only half-hardy: foliage is damaged below about -5 °C, so it overwinters cool and bright (garage, conservatory, sheltered wall). One bay plant supplies a kitchen for years — it is a purchase, not a seasonal crop.

Catnip

Nepeta cataria

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a tough, hardy perennial in the mint family. Its scent compound nepetalactone delights cats while repelling many insects. The leaves make a mildly calming herbal tea, and the flowers are a magnet for bees.

Cherry Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme

The cherry tomato is a small-fruited, extra-sweet tomato and one of the most rewarding fruiting crops for the windowsill, balcony and hydroponics. It grows as a vine, fruits long and heavily, and forgives beginner mistakes more readily than big beefsteak tomatoes.

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a hardy perennial allium with a mild onion flavour. Undemanding, they like steady moisture and grow in soil, coco and hydro.

Coriander (Cilantro)

Coriandrum sativum

Coriander is a fast-growing annual culinary herb in the carrot family. The young leaves (cilantro) season fresh dishes, the ripe seeds are the spice coriander. It likes cool, bright, evenly moist conditions — and bolts quickly in heat.

Dill

Anethum graveolens

Dill is an annual kitchen herb with fine, feathery foliage and a fresh, aromatic flavour. It grows fast, loves full sun and even moisture — let it dry out or get too hot and it bolts quickly. Leaves, flower heads and seeds are all edible.

Flaming Katy

Flaming Katy (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) is an easy succulent houseplant with dense clusters of red, orange, yellow or pink flowers. It stores water in thick leaves and blooms for weeks — perfect for a sunny windowsill.

Fuchsia

Fuchsia × standishii

The fuchsia (Fuchsia × standishii) is a free-flowering ornamental for cool, part-shade spots. It likes steady moisture and dislikes heat — ideal in soil and coco.

Garden cress

Lepidium sativum

Garden cress (Lepidium sativum) is an extremely fast leafy green, ready to harvest in just 1–2 weeks. It grows on soil, coco, cotton wool or in hydro — ideal for the windowsill.

Garden strawberry

Fragaria × ananassa

The garden strawberry is a perennial fruiting plant that spreads by runners and, depending on the variety, fruits in summer or continuously. It loves full sun, slightly acidic soil and even moisture — but hates a waterlogged crown. Indoors and in hydroponics it usually needs hand-pollination.

Hybrid Garden Rose (hybrid tea / floribunda)

Rosa × hybrida

Hybrid garden roses (Rosa × hybrida) are the classic bedding and hybrid-tea roses for outdoors — large, deep-rooted and hardy. They want full sun, rich soil and an annual hard prune in late winter. Often sold bare-root or potted.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a tropical grass with a fresh lemon aroma — the base of Thai and Vietnamese cooking. It is easy, fast-growing and loves sun, warmth and plenty of water. Frost-tender: in cool climates grow it in a pot and overwinter indoors.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a classic cool-season leafy green and one of the most rewarding hydroponic crops. It grows fast, likes cool temperatures and steady feeding.

Marjoram

Origanum majorana

Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a Mediterranean, drought-tolerant culinary herb. It likes free-draining substrate and plenty of light, and grows in soil, coco and hydro.

Miniature Rose (potted)

Rosa chinensis

The small potted roses from the supermarket are miniature/patio roses (descended from Rosa chinensis). They are sold as houseplants but are really outdoor shrubs: indoors they need lots of light and quickly suffer from spider mites. They are happiest in a cool, bright spot or outside on a balcony or bed.

Moth Orchid

Phalaenopsis amabilis

The Phalaenopsis is the most popular houseplant orchid — easy-going, blooming for weeks, and non-toxic to pets. It grows epiphytically (on trees), so it needs airy bark instead of potting soil, bright indirect light, and sparing watering.

Oregano

Origanum vulgare

Oregano (Origanum vulgare), also wild marjoram, is a robust perennial Mediterranean herb. It loves sun and dry conditions, is more pungent than marjoram, and grows in soil, coco and hydro.

Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is a biennial, cool-preferring culinary herb. It germinates slowly, likes steady moisture and grows in soil, coco and hydro.

Peppermint

Mentha × piperita

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is a vigorous perennial mint. It loves moisture and light, spreads aggressively and thrives in hydroponics, coco and soil. As a sterile hybrid it is propagated by cuttings, not seed.

Rosemary

Salvia rosmarinus

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is an evergreen Mediterranean sub-shrub. It loves sun and dry feet, grows slowly and is perennial — ideal in soil and coco, in hydro only if very well aerated.

Sage

Salvia officinalis

Common sage is a perennial, evergreen subshrub from the Mediterranean with grey-green, velvety leaves and a warm, savoury aroma. It loves sun and well-draining soil, tolerates drought and is winter-hardy — a rewarding, low-maintenance kitchen herb.

Scarlet Star

Guzmania lingulata

The Scarlet Star (Guzmania lingulata) is a tropical tank bromeliad with brilliant orange-red bracts that last for months. It grows epiphytically, takes up water through its central leaf cup, and is easy-going and non-toxic to pets.

Spearmint

Mentha spicata

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the classic culinary mint — sweeter and milder than peppermint, with little menthol. It is extremely easy, very hardy and fast-growing. Beware: it spreads by underground runners, so always grow it in a pot or crate.

Tarragon

Artemisia dracunculus

Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) is the fine anise-flavoured herb of French cuisine. The aromatic French tarragon is sterile and propagated only from cuttings. It likes things sunny, lean and above all well-drained — wet feet are its worst enemy.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is an evergreen Mediterranean sub-shrub and classic culinary herb. It loves sun and dry feet, grows slowly and is perennial — ideal in soil and coco, in hydro only if very well aerated.

Tomato

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a warmth-loving, heavy-feeding fruiting vegetable in the nightshade family. It thrives in soil, coco and every hydroponic system and crops for many weeks — great for beginners and pros alike.

Watermelon

Citrullus lanatus

Watermelon is an annual, heat-loving vine that needs plenty of space, sun and nutrients. A flower only becomes a melon if it's pollinated — indoors that means hand-pollination. Compact varieties like 'Sugar Baby' also fit a pot or Dutch bucket.

Welsh onion

The Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum), also bunching or spring onion, forms no large bulb but tender tubular leaves and white shanks. It is hardy, perennial and grows in soil, coco and hydro.
