BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key — you create your own account with the AI provider and enter the API key in Florabase. Florabase then uses your key instead of the shared server quota.
Without own key: AI Doctor 5 analyses/month, AI Advisor 50 messages/month — free, via Florabase server.
With own key: No limits. You pay the provider directly, only for what you use. New accounts receive a free starting credit there.
Your API key is stored encrypted on the Florabase server and is never returned to you in plain text. The key only leaves the server for requests to the respective provider.
AI Doctor — Set Up Plant.id Key
AI Doctor uses Plant.id (Kindwise) for plant diagnoses. Kindwise is an EU company (Czech Republic) — processing is GDPR-compliant within the EU.
Go to web.plant.id → click "Sign up" in the top right → register with your email address. New accounts receive a free quota for initial testing.
After login: open the dashboard → click "API Keys" (or "My account" → "API access") → copy the displayed key. The key usually starts with a long character string.
In Florabase: go to Settings → section "AI Doctor" → click "Change key" → paste your Plant.id key → save. From now on, no monthly limits apply for AI Doctor.
AI Advisor — Set Up Anthropic API Key
AI Advisor uses Claude by Anthropic — a powerful AI model for growth advice, diagnoses, and care recommendations based on your grow logs.
Go to console.anthropic.com → click "Sign up" → register with your email address. You need a phone number for verification. New accounts receive a free starting credit of $5.
After login: go to API Keys in the left menu → click "Create Key" → give the key a name (e.g. "Florabase") → confirm. You only see the key once — copy it immediately. It starts with sk-ant-...
In Florabase: go to Settings → section "AI Advisor" → click "Change key" → paste your Anthropic key → save. From now on, no monthly limits apply for the AI Advisor.
Anthropic charges per token used. For typical Florabase conversations (grow advice, pH corrections, care tips) costs are a few cents per conversation. The $5 starting credit covers several hundred conversations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. You can set up the Plant.id key (for AI Doctor) and the Anthropic key (for AI Advisor) independently of each other. If only one is entered, the Free limit still applies for the other.
Anthropic will then pause API access. You can top up credit at any time. Florabase will show an error message when the AI Advisor is called in this case. The Free limit only applies when no key is entered.
Your key is immediately encrypted when saved. The Florabase team has no access to stored keys in plain text. The key is no longer fully displayed after saving — only a placeholder. If you lose the key, you need to create a new one and enter it.
Yes. In Florabase Settings you can replace the key at any time with a new one. You can also delete the key on the provider's side (Plant.id or Anthropic) — then every request will fail until a new key is entered.
