Luce
Bright but no direct sun — bright indirect light keeps the colours strong.
Irrigazione
Keep the central cup about ¼ full of soft water (rain/distilled) at all times and flush it every 1–2 months. Keep the medium barely moist, never wet. Tap water with chlorine/fluoride causes brown leaf tips.
Temperatura
Warm, 18–27 °C; not below 12 °C.
Umidità
Likes high humidity (60 %+) — mist occasionally.

Problemi comuni
Rot from a soggy medium or stagnant cup water, brown leaf tips from hard/chlorinated water, no bloom on plants that are still too young.

Pests & diseases
| Pest / Disease | Symptom | Organic treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | brown bumps on leaves, sticky residue | scrape off, dab with alcohol, rinse |
| Mealybugs | white, cottony deposits in leaf axils | dab with alcohol, beneficials |
| Crown & root rot | soft, rotting leaf base; the plant pulls out of the centre | let the medium dry, refresh cup water regularly, never waterlog the mix |
Tecniche di resa
Let the pups at the base grow and separate them at half the mother's size. To trigger bloom on a mature plant: enclose it with a ripe apple in a clear bag for ~1 week (ethylene) to force flowering.
Propagation & pollination
- Method
- offset
- Germination temp
- 20-26 °C
- Pollination
- self
- Hand pollination needed
- no
After flowering the mother slowly dies and forms 2–4 offsets (pups) at the base — separate at half the mother's size and pot individually.
History
Guzmania lingulata comes from the rainforests of Central and South America, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. As a colourful, long-lasting houseplant it is now sold worldwide.
